Focused Concentration
“The acquirement and enjoyment of physical well-being, mental calm, and spiritual peace are priceless to their possessors.” ~ Joseph Pilates
The focused concentration that we use in the Pilates Method is a relaxed concentration, not something that would create tension.
We are gently and fully present, and with practice, we become more and more aware of our alignment, our quality of movement, our breath, and all the details large and small that make the exercises so great.
This is mind and body made one through breath.
What a beautiful dichotomy this yang of complex physical exercises, and yin of meditative focus. The physical work is stimulating and gets progressively more complex, and is ultimately aerobic.
The mindfulness and breath control of the Pilates Method produces the Relaxation Response, lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration, while increasing your sense of well being. This work is a moving meditation, and as with all meditation practices, can lead to so much self discovery.
Work hard, but relax, and if your mind wanders, bring your attention back to the breath and the movement.
